Lemon Owlbeard
The Lemon Owlbeard is an incredibly rare and newly imported breed from Holland, showcasing a stunning lemon color beautifully contrasted by spangled black tips. These beautiful birds lay large white eggs, making them a delightful addition to any flock.
Breed History
The Owlbeard is a historic Dutch breed with roots tracing back to the 1500s. Despite its long history, it remains exceptionally rare in the United States, with Lemon Owlbeards being imported as recently as 2018. There are currently only a limited number of breeders in the U.S. for these unique birds. They feature a distinctive V-shaped comb and slate legs, while their most striking characteristic is their stunning lemon-colored feathers accented with spangled black tips. Both males and females sport prominent black muffs and beards, and this breed is known for laying extra-large white eggs.
In our experience, these birds thrive best with enrichment or ample space. Their alert nature makes them ideal for free-ranging, but they do well in spacious runs. They are notably winter hardy, making them suitable for the Northeast and colder climates.
