Black Copper Marans
Famous for laying the darkest eggs available from any breed and claimed to have the best tasting egg in the world!
Breed History
Originating from France in the 13th century, Black Copper Marans were developed along the Atlantic coast and are named after the port town of Marans. This breed was created through the crossbreeding of various birds that arrived on ships. They made their way to the USA around the end of World War II.
Black Copper Marans are particularly distinguished by their large, dark chocolate-russet eggs, which are their defining characteristic. While there are some varieties with clean legs, the American Standard calls for feathered feet, which adds to their charm.
These birds feature striking reddish bay eyes and a single comb, with hens showcasing deep copper along their neck feathers, accented by a dark stripe through each feather. The rest of their body is a rich black, while the roosters exhibit deep copper on their neck hackle, back, and saddle feathers, with glossy black wings and tails.
It's important to note that the darkness of the eggs can vary significantly depending on the breeder's line, and we are proud to offer a line of exceptionally dark chocolate eggs. Most of our eggs range between 6-9 on the Marans Club egg color card. The hue/darkness varies throughout an egg's laying cycle, so you will find the same hen can lay eggs that vary in score.
